IBM Lotus Symphony
IBM Lotus Notes 8 have three so-called 'Productivity Tools' as standard accessories. Those are office tools, based on the Open Document Format (ODF).
Text editing, spreadsheets and slides
You dispose of a text editor, a spreadsheet program and a presentation program. Lotus Notes users can easily create, edit and save the most common office documents (letters, excel sheets, presentation slides...).
Save on your Microsoft Office licenses
In other words, IBM Lotus Symphony offers a free (included in the Lotus Notes licences) alternative for office suites like Microsoft Office. Even when a small proportion of your employees doesn't need Microsoft Office for specific advanced functions, this can be a huge saving in your IT budget. After all, the majority of employees doesn't need these functions and can work perfectly with IBM Lotus Symphony.
Open Document Format
IBM Lotus Symphony is based on the Open Document Format and generates documents as Open Document Format files (.odf). However, you can open, edit and save other formats (.doc, .xls) as well. The ODF is an open standard that isn't linked to one specific supplier.
